Start with the center
OpenClaw is built around its Gateway. Hermes focuses on learning and tools.
Hermes Agent
The Hermes guides focus on a learning loop that saves useful lessons from earlier work. They also cover memory, reusable tools, and several places where work can run.
OpenClaw
The OpenClaw guides focus on one self-hosted Gateway. A Gateway is the always-on hub that connects chat apps, saved conversations, a dashboard, and linked devices.
Both connect to messaging services and tools. Both can save setup information and connect to an AI service outside the server. That outside service may receive your prompts. These are their main focuses. Both tools may offer other features too.
Side by side
Start with what you want the agent to do.
A container is a packaged place for the app to run. An API is a connection that lets other software use the agent.

Managed plan
The provider handles only the tasks named in its current terms.
Which one may fit
Pick the focus that matches your work.
Hermes may fit when…
- you want the agent to save useful lessons from earlier work;
- you need work to run inside a separate package, on another server, or in a separate online work area;
- you want to start work from a desktop app, a typed command window, or a messaging app;
- you want to preview importing an existing OpenClaw setup.
OpenClaw may fit when…
- you want one always-on hub to connect several chat apps;
- you want a product-specific setup guide instead of starting with a blank server;
- you want a web dashboard or linked devices that can do approved local work;
- you already use a ready-made setup from a hosting company;
No safety winner
How you set it up affects how safe it is.
Neither product is always safer. Safety depends on how you set it up. Keep access private, approve users, protect secret keys, keep risky work away from important files, install updates, and back up your data.

Straight answers
Hermes Agent and OpenClaw questions.
Is Hermes Agent the same as OpenClaw?
No. They are separate projects. Compare the current Hermes and OpenClaw guides.
Can Hermes Agent and OpenClaw both run on a VPS?
Yes. See the current Hermes container guide and OpenClaw server guide.
Which one is easier to install?
There is no proven winner. Both offer installers. A ready-made server setup may remove steps, but check which jobs the provider handles.
Does either product include the AI model?
Not in every setup. You normally choose or connect a model provider. Some managed plans can include a built-in connection to an AI model.
Can Hermes import my OpenClaw setup?
Hermes currently documents a migration command. Preview the import, make a backup, and check the result before relying on it. Read the current Hermes migration guide.
Which one costs less?
It depends on the server and model provider. Tools and backups can also change the cost. A fair fixed answer needs the same test setup, which we have not run.
